“Zombies?”
Dustin raised an eyebrow in surprise. “I’ve
only heard people mention them. Never seen one in person. Are they really as
formidable as the legends say?”
Zombies --- sinister beings that exist outside
the Six Paths --- were said to be immortal, feeding on human blood and
absorbing the essence of the sun and moon.
Ancient texts described terrifying zombies
capable of razing entire cities, leaving behind nothing but scorched earth.
“Zombies are beings of extreme evil and
darkness,” Margaret said solemnly. “Their bodies are like iron and bronze --- impervious
to weapons. Destroying them is extremely difficult. What’s worse is the corpse
poison they carry. Anyone bitten or scratched by them will become a new zombie.
One turns into ten, ten into a hundred…”
Corpse poison spread far more violently than
any plague.
Plagues could be contained with medicine. But
once corpse poison spread, there was no stopping it.
The only solution was to eliminate everyone infected, completely and
without exception.
If the zombies weren't stopped in time, it was
only a matter of time before Pucheng
was wiped out.
“The White Bone Sect’s remnants are truly a
plague upon this world,” Dustin said, his tone growing colder. “First it was
the plague, then the red mist, and now zombies? One wave after another --- it
never ends.”
Though he had now broken through a major
cultivation barrier and gained significant power, the endless harassment from
the White Bone Sect was infuriating.
Once he found their hideout, he swore to wipe them out completely.
“I’ve already sent troops to block all major
roads,” Margaret said. “But I’m not sure they can hold off an attack from that
many zombies. If our defenses collapse, the people of Pucheng will be exposed…
and then, there’ll be rivers of blood.”
Corpse poison spread so rapidly that even
soldiers were at risk. If they were infected, it would lead to an even greater
disaster.
“What do you need me to do?” Dustin asked
directly.
Clearly, she hadn’t called him here without a
purpose.
“I need you to step in --- to block the zombie advance, and if
possible, wipe them out completely,”
Margaret said.
“How many zombies are we talking about in
Pucheng?” Dustin asked.
“Hundreds, maybe thousands. And the numbers are
still growing fast,” she answered honestly.
“That many… and they’re scattered?” Dustin
paused to think, then said, “In that case, have the army evacuate the civilians
--- get them as far away from the zombies as possible. Limit new infections.
Then, select a few teams to lure all the zombies to a single location. Once
they’re gathered, I’ll exterminate them
all at once. It’ll be faster, safer, and minimize casualties.”
“Brilliant idea! I’ll have people start on that
immediately!”
Margaret waved a hand and summoned her trusted
aide to issue the orders swiftly.
Just as Dustin said, fighting zombies one by one was far too inefficient.
Eliminating them all
at once
was the only effective solution.
“Knowing the White Bone Sect’s twisted nature,
I doubt this zombie outbreak is limited to Pucheng alone,” Dustin suddenly
added.
“You’re absolutely right.”
Margaret nodded gravely. “The first outbreak
occurred in Liyang City, then spread to Lincheng and Wugang City, with Pucheng
being the last to be affected. In comparison, Pucheng is actually in better
shape. Liyang City has it the worst --- thousands
have already been infected.”
“All four cities experiencing zombie outbreaks
at the same time… The White Bone Sect is backing us into a corner,” Dustin narrowed his eyes, a sharp
killing intent flickering within.
“They’re trying to use the people of these four
cities as part of a massive blood
ritual --- to summon what they call the True Bone God,” Margaret said, her brow tightly furrowed.
“If we want to save Pucheng, we can’t ignore the other three,” Dustin
said. “Send word to the three princes --- tell them to begin evacuating their
civilians immediately. Stop the spread of the corpse poison. Later, if we can
lure the zombies into one place, I’ll handle them one by one.”
“Understood!” Margaret didn’t hesitate and
began reaching out at once.
This was a moment of life and death for the
people of all four cities --- everyone
needed to work together.
If the corpse poison was allowed to fully
spread, it wouldn’t just be four cities in danger.
The entire Southern
Frontier,
perhaps even the whole Dragonmarsh,
would plunge into unprecedented chaos.
It could shake the very foundation of the
country.
When Margaret delivered Dustin’s message to the
three princes, their responses varied.
Prince Li Wenxing was resolute and acted
without hesitation. He immediately ordered his men to evacuate civilians and
create distance from the zombies to break the chain of infection.
His actions were based on both his trust in
Margaret and his recognition that this
was the only viable solution.
Without a better plan, he could only comply and
rely on the unmatched strength of Dustin to eliminate the undead threat.
In contrast, Prince Li Guanglong was far more stubborn and arrogant.
In his eyes, there was no problem that couldn’t be solved with firepower.
Zombies? What a joke.
He had guns, cannons, tanks, aircraft --- he
refused to believe these undead creatures couldn’t be blown to bits.
Asking him to withdraw his troops? That was
cowardice, plain and simple.
He scoffed at the idea.
But his arrogance would soon come back to haunt
him.
And he would pay a terrible price for it. - Vivek
